The Frog Princess Punked
A punk fairytale for adults: narrative + noise, surreal images + raw sounds
Performed and created by The Swamp Girls:
Sally Pomme Clayton – story / Georgia Kalogeropoulou – composer, and guitars, saxophone and voice /
Dawn Rose – musical arrangement, and drums / Fotios Begklis – images
Crazed Russian fairytale meets punk rock! What happens when Ivan is forced to marry a frog? Bad sounds. Big noise. A wicked racket! Urban meets forest. Patriarchy meets feminism. Baba Yaga meets Koschey the Deathless! Pioneering storyteller Sally Pomme Clayton and an all-girl band embark on a provocative collaboration combining the noise of punk with a surreal narrative about the dangers of annexing the wild, and the wisdom of liberating the female. Together they create a hullabaloo of spoken word and electric guitars, songs and distorted sounds, powerful drumming and rhythmic speech, all set in a shifting collage of images. The Frog Princess Punked extends the bounds of storytelling, reaching new audiences, testing current ones, hopping into new venues! Its gonna be loud! Its gonna be angry. Its gonna be rough! “Disgusting! Get out before the doors close!” The Guardian
This proect is under-construction and is gratefully supported by Arts Council funding and amazing support from Omnibus Clapham. We have been accepted to be part of ‘Engine Room’ – Omnibus’s development programme for making new, hybrid work. Through ‘Engine Room’ we will explore the first 25 minutes of the performance (one third of the piece) and showcase this work on 24 Feb 2017. The project will then continue to be developed through rehearsals and we will try-out the whole performance at New River Studios 4 May 2017 (tickets not on sale yet, but will be £5.00, and will mostly be sold on the door). This will be a stand up gig (not much seating audience!) We hope you will drink beer and dance as you listen to the story! We will continue to rehearse and refine the piece, then premiere it at Soho Theatre 5 June 2017 programmed and supported by The Crick Crack Club. This will be the usual sit down situation – so dancing in your seats – but its gonna be loud! The Frog Princess Punked is a collaboration between women from different cultures, art forms, and generations. Sally-Pomme saw punk, it was part of her teenage world, she was there, watching The Slits! Georgia and Dawn are young female musicians inspired by the sounds of punk and re-making them anew.
